January 20th - Doctors Without Drawings

So last night, after I zipped up, I decided to stay on the internet a little while longer as I became sleepy.  It's been a little more than a week since the Earth quaked and I wanted to see what the great thinkers of the media have come up with for their latest political cartoons on this tragedy.  These are always completely predictable and as I reached the site, guess what?  God dammnit if they weren't exactly as I predicted:

Piles of rubbled with a black hand reaching out from under it, as if desperately fighting for air.

When these tragedies strike, it is almost like an international holiday for these cartoonists, well, at least they get the day of from work.  I know I can't blame them for what seems to be laziness and we surely cannot be prejudice about their craft and their intention, because maybe it's a resounding rule in that business.  Then again, it could also be one giant coincidence that every political cartoonist just happened to draw images of hands reaching out from piles of rubble, right?

I did some research on the days following other natural disasters and what the majorty of political cartoonist have responded with:

Haiti Earthquake (2010):  Black hands reaching out from under rubble.  Haiti spelled in rubble.

Hurricane Katrina (2005): Black/White hands reaching out from under water. New Orleans spelled in water.

Indian Ocean Tsunami (2004): Brown hands reaching out from under water. Indonesia spelled in water.

Exxon Valdez (1989): Animal hands reaching out from under oil. Alask spelled in oil.

The Black Plaque (1330): White hands reaching out from under rats. Europe spelled in bones.
